Surfrider Foundation at the Rip Curl Pro Tofino

Surfrider was there for the action-packed Rip Curl Pro event, in Tofino BC, June 9 & 10, 2012. We raised funds through a combination of on-site food sales, raffles, party tickets and donations. We had a chance to engage with the Pacific Rim surf community and hosted daily beach cleanups of Cox Bay with partner SPY during the event.

While there, we posed the question - why do you love your beach? Enjoy this video of the event made by Shaun and Devon Finn at FINNesse Media, with music by Warless.

Big thanks to Rip Curl, the Long Beach Lodge & Resort, SPY, and our team of volunteers for doing so much to make Surfrider's participation in the 6th annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino such a success.

Support STAND: A SUP Adventure Through The Great Bear Rainforest

Through b4apres Media's unique style of mashing adventure with real world issues, “STAND” will take you into the heart of the largest temperate rainforest on the planet—the Great Bear in British Columbia, Canada. Hung on the skeleton of a good ol' fashioned adventure undertaken by a group of surfers, the potential effects of introducing super tankers to these pristine waters will be articulated. As the crew moves through this remote region under their own power, the landscape will be unfurled one paddle stroke at a time and punctuated by the faces and fears of the First Nation people who call this garden of Eden their home. Not just an efficient mode of transport, a stand up paddleboard expedition will be symbolic of “standing up” to preserve this last bastion of rainforest. Captured in cinematic High Definition, the film will bring the Enbridge Pipeline debate into the the collective consciousness in a way that will have you fishing in your basement for that old fluorescent wetsuit.

IndieGoGo Crowdfunding Campaign

b4apres has launched an innovative campaign to raise funding for production of the film. is a popular crowdfunding platform that allows audiences to pledge different amounts of money towards creative projects to help make them a reality.  In return backers receive various rewards for their donation.  Perhaps most significantly, backers of STAND become part of the production team.

Supporting STAND is easy.  Backers simply choose their reward and pledge via credit card or PayPal.  Some of our awesome rewards include a cedar paddleboard handmade by the children of Bella Bella and the opportunity to join the crew on the expedition.

All funds raised will go towards production costs including travel expenses, music rights, post production, etc.  We already have all the equipment necessary to shoot and edit the film, meaning all funds raised will be used to finish this film so others can discover this pristine part of the world for themselves.  This is a passion project with everybody involved being extremely committed to the preservation of wild places.

Why is this so important?

If the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline goes ahead it will see super tankers carrying ten times the amount of oil spilled in the Exxon Valdez plying the pristine waters of the Great Bear Rainforest. Recognized as some of the most dangerous navigable waters in the world, an oil spill in this region would destroy an entire marine and terrestrial ecosystem and directly affect the livelihoods of the communities that live in the Great Bear.

The filmmakers hope to highlight the beauty of the landscape and the deep connection to the land that the people of the Great Bear have in order to increase awareness of what is at stake whilst encouraging audiences to get outside and connect with the natural world in their own way. hosts a swap & auction to benefit Surfrider
